STORIES FROM THE RING
It’s so important to do what you love and stick with what you like. Don’t get me wrong, it’s important to try new things, but don’t let others sway your heart. Isaac does this better than anyone. From fashion to sheep, he knows what he likes, and he sticks with it. While I wish he’d expand his food pallet a bit more, I so love that he’s true to himself. The sheep show at the @ncstatefair was a perfect reminder of staying true to yourself.
Sassa is the daughter of Isaac’s special Astrid sheep. He loves his Icelandic crosses, but to be honest, I never know what to do with them. I don’t dislike their wool, but it’s different. It never sways Isaac, though, and this year, he got to say “told you so” when Sassa won first place in her class and Reserve Champion Dual Coated Ewe! I was so happy for Isaac! I also ate some crow.

It all started with a goat...
While these days I'm more of a sheep and pig girl, it all started with goats. When I was 9 or 10, Dad brought home two for us to show. They ended up being too old, so we sold them and bought four goats--Molly May, Gracie, Brownie, and Snowie. Molly was a registered Boer goat and the other three were Nubian/Boer crosses.
It was those four goats that cultivated my love and passion for agriculture and showing livestock. Those four goats, at one point became 50 goats. I learned to trim hooves, administer vaccinations, feed, breed, and care for goats. I've cried, cussed, and laughed at those goats. Each had a name. Some, were more special than others, but each one taught me lessons in responsibility, hard work, patience, kindness, stubbornness, and animal husbandry.
Eventually, we ended up selling most of our goat herd. We kept the four special ones--Lulu, Miracle, Marshmallow (pictured), and Lillie.
For almost two decades, we've always had at least one goat on the property. I could tell you story after story of the "special" ones like Leroy, Truth, Zipper, Kade, Gracie, and Button (swipe to see Button pictured with little me), and maybe one day, I'll dive into some archive photos and tell those stories.
While we don't raise goats anymore, they hold a special place in my heart.
After all, it all started with a goat.
